Meta themeDirect fighting over high mobility

The defining design choice of the S8 patch is a shift away from mobility: nerfs land on fast-sprint weapons, high-movement killstreaks, and evasion-based equipment, while buffs reward players who hold ground and win fights at close-to-mid range. For GameLoop PC players — who already have better aim precision than the average mobile player — this shift generally favours the emulator meta.

Weapon meta changes

These changes are from the test-server patch notes, confirmed by the official S8 patch notes at launch.

Nerfs

FSS Hurricane SMG — sprint speed reduced. The dominant sprint-and-gun weapon of Season 7 loses some of its advantage in short-range push play. The combination of raw damage and fast sprint was its appeal; that margin narrows in S8.

Recommended substitute: The Fennec and LAPA both received buffs this season. If your Season 7 TAC loadout was built around the Hurricane, Fennec is a direct swap — comparable engagement range, now relatively stronger after the nerf.

VTOL Jet (killstreak) — loses the damage protection phase before hover begins. The protected hover was a frustrating advantage that rewarded deployment more than aim. Removing it makes the VTOL killstreak punishable while it is settling.

Jet Boost (BR) — wall-running ability removed from Battle Royale. This simplifies close-range tracking significantly on PC. Opponents no longer gain a sudden vertical axis from a wall run; the engagement reads more like standard footwork, which keyboard-and-mouse handles well.

Buffs

S36 LMG — ADS time 420ms → 380ms; sprint-to-fire time 180ms → 150ms. The S36 was accurate at mid range but slow to reach aim, which made it frustrating when a target stepped into the open. These gains close that gap. On a mouse, you will notice the difference in snap-ADS situations. Pair it with a 3× or 4× scope at 55–60 ADS multiplier; do not try to bring this into small-map close-range modes.

Fennec SMG — buffed. Exact stats not released pre-launch; the patch makes Fennec meaningfully stronger relative to the Hurricane's nerf.

LAPA SMG — buffed. Similar position to the Fennec: strengthened in the wake of the Hurricane losing sprint dominance.

Cronen Squall AR — buffed. The Cronen was already in the top half of ARs for longer ranges; this improvement extends its lead.

Krig 6 AR, FFAR 1 AR — both buffed. Mid-pack ARs that had loyal user bases for specific playstyles. Worth retesting if you set these aside in S7.

Arctic .50 Sniper — buffed. Sniping on keyboard-and-mouse is already more viable than on mobile because mouse tracking is more precise than thumb input. Improvements to the Arctic .50 mean this season is favourable for players building a marksman loadout.

Tactical and equipment changes

Flash Drone: 1 → 2 starting uses. The extra charge rewards aggressive use — throw the first one as a push opener, keep the second in reserve.

Inflatable Decoy: 1 → 2 starting uses. The Decoy is especially useful as a counter to quickscoping on PC: throw one into a corridor, let a sniper burn their shot on it, push the empty chamber. Two starting Decoys doubles your counter-play budget per life.

Sticky Grenade — radius expanded to 5.5m; minimum damage raised to 80. A near-miss is now a reliable trade. This matters most in ranked Multiplayer modes with objective control (Hardpoint, S&D) where camping an objective is otherwise unpunished.

Battle Royale class changes

Quick Strike — dash distance reduced; damage significantly increased. A shorter dash in exchange for much higher burst damage. Expect the class to be more useful in close-quarters ambushes and less useful for crossing open ground.

Ninja — grapple distance decreased to 15m; charges increased; cooldown reduced. More frequent grapple at shorter range. On keyboard, the Ninja class was already effective because mouse aim makes the post-grapple engagement cleaner; the increased charge count extends the class's value further into a match.

Honkai Impact 3rd crossover

Season 8 includes a crossover collaboration with Honkai Impact 3rd. A free Mythic Event is available to all players at launch — you do not need to purchase anything to access event-track rewards. Further details on operators, cosmetics, and Lucky Draw items are in the Season 8 Honkai preview guide.

First actions on launch day

  1. Run the TAC updater before opening CODM. A season patch typically adds 1.5–3 GB of assets. The updater downloads in the background on first launch but fails silently if your drive is near full. Leave at least 5 GB free.
  2. Clear the TAC cache once the patch is installed. Every new season ships a revised asset manifest. The old cache references Season 7 paths and causes missing textures or crashes on first load. TAC → Performance → Clear Cache → relaunch CODM.
  3. Check your engine-mode settings. Seasonal patches occasionally reset the DirectX+ or OpenGL+ preference. Reconfirm your engine mode before your first ranked match.
  4. Retest your sensitivity in the new meta. S8 removes wall-running and reduces the FSS Hurricane's sprint dominance — two things that generate sudden camera movement. You may find a slightly lower ADS sensitivity works better in Season 8.
