FSS Hurricane nerfed in CODM S8 — what to run on GameLoop PC instead

Season 8 "Against All Fate" cuts the FSS Hurricane's sprint speed. Here is what that means on a keyboard and mouse, and which SMGs to run in its place.

The FSS Hurricane has been the dominant close-to-mid-range SMG for emulator players through CODM Season 7. Its combination of a fast sprint speed and strong damage output made it the default answer to any "what SMG should I run?" question for keyboard-and-mouse players. Season 8 changes that.

The Season 8 "Against All Fate" patch reduces the FSS Hurricane's sprint speed. At the same time, the patch buffs two SMGs that have lived in the Hurricane's shadow all season: the Fennec and the LAPA. This article explains what the nerf does on an emulator, which alternatives are worth testing, and how to adapt your loadout now.

What the nerf actually does

The official Season 8 patch notes confirm the FSS Hurricane's sprint speed dropped from 6.41 m/s to 6.26 m/s — a 2.3% reduction. Additionally, the FTac Coldforge 16" Barrel attachment now adds a −6% ADS movement speed penalty that was not there before. Sprint speed is the movement speed while sprinting with the weapon drawn — it is not ADS speed, fire rate, or damage range.

For touchscreen players, sprint speed is tied directly to their ability to sprint-shoot by holding a sprint key. For keyboard players, the mechanic is the same but the control is different: you are pressing Shift (or a bound sprint key) while strafing and tracking. The Hurricane's previous sprint speed made it fast enough to rotate positions before an opponent finished placing their crosshair.

What changes for PC players:

  • Rotations are slightly slower. Pushing from cover to cover in small-map modes takes marginally longer — not enough to feel broken, but enough to change timing at high skill levels.
  • The Hurricane's primary advantage was always "it does damage AND it moves fast." That ratio tilts. The weapon still does damage. It just moves a bit more like a normal SMG now.
  • You will not notice this nerf if you are using the Hurricane in a semi-passive role (holding corners, playing mid-range). You will notice it if you were using the Hurricane specifically for its movement advantage in Hardpoint or Domination rushes.

Which SMGs to try instead

The S8 patch explicitly buffs two SMGs. These are your direct Hurricane alternatives.

Fennec SMG

The Fennec gets buffed in S8. Exact stat changes were not published at patch launch, but the Fennec was already competitive in Season 7 — it had a faster fire rate than the Hurricane and a similar engagement profile, held back mainly by slightly weaker base damage output.

For emulator players, the Fennec's high fire rate is relevant because mouse aim can keep up with it. On a touchscreen, a fast fire rate partially compensates for less precise aim; on a mouse, it layers on top of solid aiming and means faster time-to-kill if you land your shots. The Fennec rewards players who aim well more than the Hurricane does.

Who should try the Fennec:

  • Players running close-range MP modes (Kill Confirmed, Domination, Hardpoint)
  • Anyone who was already comfortable with the Hurricane at 10–20 metre ranges
  • Players with high confidence in their mouse tracking at close distance

LAPA SMG

The LAPA also receives a concrete buff in S8: its damage profile moves from 31/28/20/16 to 33/29/22/16 across its four damage tiers. Every tier except the maximum range got bumped — two extra damage at close range, one at mid, two at the third tier. The LAPA was considered the "controlled" alternative to the Hurricane in Season 7 — lower sprint speed than the Hurricane at its peak, but better handling and easier to use at slightly longer SMG ranges.

Post-buff, the LAPA becomes a strong option for emulator players who play a more conservative SMG style: holding a lane rather than sprinting into it. Its handling was already good; the buff makes it competitive with the Hurricane's damage profile.

Who should try the LAPA:

  • Players in mid-range SMG engagements (20–30 metres)
  • Players who prioritize controlled aim over sprint-and-gun
  • Anyone running the SMG as a secondary to an AR or Sniper loadout

The S36 LMG is worth a look

One non-obvious beneficiary of the S8 patch is the S36 LMG, which gets a meaningful buff: ADS time drops from 420 ms to 380 ms, and sprint-to-fire time drops from 180 ms to 150 ms.

The S36 is not an SMG replacement. It is a primary weapon for players who want to hold angles at 30–60 metres without being punished for being slow to aim. The 40 ms ADS improvement is large enough to notice — the old S36 frequently lost engagements because a target appeared in the open and you could not get aimed in time. At 380 ms, that window is shorter.

If your Hurricane use case was "I want a fast, aggressive weapon for small maps," the Fennec is your answer. If your Hurricane use case was "I want to hold mid-range positions reliably," the S36 is worth testing for a different but viable approach.

GameLoop-specific notes

A few things apply specifically to playing these weapons on GameLoop PC:

Keymapping for the Fennec: The Fennec's fast fire rate means you should map your fire button to a mechanical key with a short actuation distance if possible. If you are using a mouse button for fire (Left Click mapped to "Tap to fire"), make sure your click response is set to "Instant" in GameLoop's advanced settings, not "Press and hold."

Sprint key setup: The sprint speed nerf on the Hurricane makes this a good time to review your movement keybinds in general. In GameLoop, sprint is often auto-sprint (the default) or manually bound. If you are testing the Fennec in an aggressive style, confirm that auto-sprint is enabled so you do not lose movement speed in rotation.

LAPA keymapping: The LAPA plays well with a dedicated ADS key (Right Click → ADS). Its handling bonus means it benefits from committing to aimed fire rather than hip-fire; make sure your mouse sensitivity multiplier while ADS is 55–65 for this weapon's engagement range.

Summary

WeaponChange in S8Best for
FSS HurricaneSprint speed reduced (NERF)Less optimal for sprint-push builds
Fennec SMGBuffedAggressive close-range, fast-fire tracking
LAPA SMGBuffedControlled mid-range, secondary SMG role
S36 LMGADS 420→380 ms, STF 180→150 ms (BUFF)Mid-range angle-holding, primary build

The Hurricane is not dead. It still does damage and remains viable in a passive role. If you were using it specifically for its sprint speed advantage in rush-heavy modes, you will want to test the Fennec. If you were using it as an all-rounder that happened to feel fast, run it for a few games and decide if the change is meaningful to your playstyle before switching.
