CODM S8 Controller and Gamepad Setup Guide for GameLoop PC
Connecting a controller to GameLoop is straightforward but not automatic — controller mode, aim assist, and Smart Tool overlays are three separate toggles. This guide covers the full setup, sensitivity starting points, and S8 weapon notes for controller players.
Connecting a controller to GameLoop works, but the setup is not automatic. CODM's controller mode is separate from GameLoop's Smart Tool overlay, aim assist is a separate toggle from controller mode, and DualShock 4 / DualSense controllers need DS4Windows as a bridge before GameLoop can read them. Once all three are configured correctly, the experience is stable — aim assist activates cleanly and Smart Tool stops injecting phantom keyboard inputs.

Why Use a Controller in CODM on PC?
Most CODM players on GameLoop use keyboard and mouse — the Smart Tool's keymapping is designed for that setup, and mouse aim is faster for most use cases.
Controllers make sense if:
- You prefer the familiar console feel for movement and ability triggering
- You're coming from console COD and the muscle memory is already there
- You play modes like multiplayer where rotational aim assist is more useful than raw aim speed
The tradeoff: Mouse aim in CODM gives a precision ceiling that controllers can't match in a 1v1 aim-duel scenario. If you're playing ranked competitively, keyboard and mouse is the stronger choice. Controller is a valid option for casual multiplayer or Battle Royale where positional movement sometimes matters more than flick aim.
Step 1: Connect Your Controller
USB (recommended): Plug in via USB. GameLoop detects XInput devices automatically within 2–3 seconds of connection.
Bluetooth:
- Put the controller in pairing mode (Xbox: hold Xbox button + Share button until flashing; DualSense: hold Create + PS button)
- Open Windows Bluetooth settings → Add device
- Pair the controller
- Launch GameLoop after pairing — it reads connected Bluetooth controllers on startup
DualShock 4 / DualSense note: These use DirectInput natively. For GameLoop, install DS4Windows first. DS4Windows presents the controller to Windows as an XInput device, which GameLoop reads correctly.
Download DS4Windows from the official GitHub: github.com/Ryochan7/DS4Windows — ignore unofficial mirror sites.
Step 2: Enable Controller Mode in CODM
Once the controller is connected and GameLoop is running CODM:
- In CODM, open Settings (gear icon)
- Go to Controls tab
- Scroll to Controller Settings
- Set Controller Mode: On
- The on-screen buttons will shift to controller button prompts (LT/RT icons, etc.)
If Controller Mode doesn't appear, the controller may not be detected. Check: GameLoop taskbar → Performance → confirm the controller appears under Input Devices.
Step 3: Default Controller Layout
CODM auto-applies a default layout when Controller Mode is enabled. This layout works well as a starting point:
| Button | Action |
|---|---|
| Left stick | Move |
| Right stick | Camera / look |
| LT | ADS (aim down sights) |
| RT | Fire |
| LB | Switch fire mode / grenade type |
| RB | Switch weapon |
| A / Cross | Jump |
| B / Circle | Crouch / prone |
| X / Square | Reload |
| Y / Triangle | Melee / interact |
| D-pad Up | Equipment (lethal) |
| D-pad Down | Equipment (tactical) |
| D-pad Left/Right | Ability rotate |
| Start/Options | Pause / map (BR) |
| Back/Share | Scoreboard |
You can customize any binding in Settings → Controls → Controller Settings → Custom Layout.
Step 4: Aim Assist — What to Expect on Emulator
CODM's aim assist for controllers was designed primarily for touch devices and is carried into the PC emulator path. The behavior differs from what console players expect:
Slowdown aim assist: When your right stick crosses an enemy hitbox, the camera slows slightly. This is the main form of CODM's aim assist and it does work on the emulator path.
Magnetism: CODM has some bullet magnetism (bullets bend slightly toward hitboxes during ADS). This applies on the emulator the same as on mobile.
What's weaker vs. console: Console COD games (Warzone, Black Ops 6) have stronger rotational aim assist that tracks moving targets. CODM's mobile-derived aim assist is less aggressive. On the emulator, you're not getting console-strength aim assist — you're getting the mobile-game aim assist, which is lighter.
Setting to check: In CODM → Settings → Controls → Aim → toggle Aim Assist On. This is separate from Controller Mode and must be enabled independently.
Step 5: Sensitivity Settings
Controller sensitivity in CODM is set independently from the touchscreen/mouse path. After enabling Controller Mode, go to Settings → Controls → Sensitivity.
Starting point for controller sensitivity:
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| General Sensitivity | 55–65 |
| Firing Sensitivity (Hipfire) | 60–70 |
| ADS Sensitivity (all scopes) | 45–55 |
| Gyroscope | Off (no gyroscope input from controller) |
These are starting points, not hard rules. Adjust based on how fast targets move across your screen at your typical engagement range.
One key difference from mouse settings: Mouse players often run high ADS sensitivity (70+) because mouse precision compensates. Controller sticks have a deadzone and acceleration curve, so starting lower and increasing gives you more consistent control.
Step 6: SmartTool Configuration for Controller
GameLoop's Smart Tool overlay (visible while CODM is running) has a controller mode. By default, it may try to overlay keyboard/mouse bindings on the game while a controller is active. You want to disable that.
In the Smart Tool toolbar:
- Click the keyboard icon to open the keymapping editor
- Look for a Controller toggle at the top
- Enable controller mode — this tells Smart Tool to not inject keyboard overlays
- Save the profile
If Smart Tool and the physical controller conflict (both trying to handle the same input), the controller should take priority but Smart Tool overlays can cause phantom inputs. Disabling the keyboard overlay when using a controller resolves this.
S8 Weapon Notes for Controller Players
The Season 8 meta in ranked has centered on the Cronen Squall (AR) and Static-HV (SMG). Controller players should know:
Cronen Squall on controller: The Cronen Squall has a controlled horizontal sway pattern. Controller players benefit from the slowdown aim assist when tracking after the first 3 shots of a burst. Recommended attachment: any recoil smoothing barrel rather than a pure damage-range build.
Static-HV on controller: Fast TTK at close-to-mid range. The SMG fights where Static-HV excels (under 30m) are range where controller aim assist slowdown is most active — this weapon class fits controller play well.
ISO Hemlock on controller: The ISO Hemlock's full-auto recoil is more controller-friendly than its 5-shot burst mode. If you're on controller, run the full-auto Hemlock build rather than the burst variant that keyboard players prefer.
Common Issues
Controller detected in Windows but not in GameLoop:
- Restart GameLoop after connecting the controller (it reads inputs at launch)
- For DualShock 4/DualSense: confirm DS4Windows is running before launching GameLoop
- Check Windows: Settings → Devices → Bluetooth and other devices — controller should show as Connected
Aim assist not activating:
- Confirm Controller Mode is On in CODM settings
- Confirm Aim Assist is separately enabled in Controls → Sensitivity
- Note: aim assist only activates during ADS or hipfire — not while in menus or map view
Controller inputs registering as keyboard inputs:
- Smart Tool is likely injecting keyboard overlays; switch Smart Tool to controller mode (see Step 6)
- Restart CODM without closing GameLoop after changing Smart Tool settings
Stick drift:
- Not an emulator issue — this is a physical controller problem
- Temporary fix in CODM: Settings → Controls → Sensitivity → increase Deadzone value for affected stick
- A deadzone of 15–20 usually masks minor drift
