CODM S8 Counter-Play Guide — How to Beat the Meta Weapons on GameLoop PC

The S8 meta runs on the LAPA, Static-HV, and ISO Hemlock. If you're playing against them on PC, here's how to position, equip, and outplay each — and why mouse-and-keyboard gives you a structural edge in most of these matchups.

The Season 8 meta has settled. The top-ranked lobbies run the LAPA SMG, the Static-HV SMG, and the ISO Hemlock AR as their primary threat. Each one wins a specific type of engagement: the LAPA dominates close-range pressure, the Static-HV fills a mid-close gap the LAPA cannot always cover, and the ISO Hemlock punishes anything at medium range.

If you are grinding ranked in the final weeks of S8 on GameLoop PC, understanding how each of these weapons is typically used — and what counters them — is more practically useful than a loadout guide. You will face these weapons in every match.

This guide is structured by weapon: what it does well, what it cannot do, and how PC mouse-and-keyboard changes the counter options available to you.

Countering the LAPA SMG

Why it works

The LAPA received a damage buff in S8. Its time-to-kill at close range is among the fastest in the game, and it rewards aggressive players who close distance quickly and spray at close quarters. Most LAPA users you face in ranked are running it because they can rush a position and win before you can adjust.

Its weaknesses

Range is the LAPA's hard limit. The damage falloff past close range is significant — the same weapon that deletes you in a corridor struggles to win a duel at 20+ meters.

The LAPA also rewards mobile players who reposition constantly. Players who hold a corner with it or take static fights are not using it correctly. If you draw a LAPA user into a longer engagement, you have already changed the matchup in your favor.

How to counter it on PC

Distance first. Every counter-play decision against the LAPA starts with range. If you are in a building, take the room where the sightlines are longer. If you are rotating, use cover to deny them the close-range entry, not the open lane that lets them sprint through.

Mouse precision at medium range. Against a LAPA user trying to close distance, you want to punish them before they get in range. On PC, you can track a sprinting player with a mouse at medium range in a way that is genuinely difficult on mobile. An ISO Hemlock AR or Krig 6 aimed at a player crossing an open area at 20 meters is a realistic outplay — land the first shots before they reach their optimal range and the engagement is already decided.

Use corners deliberately. Do not peek around corners toward a LAPA user unless you are at the range where your weapon wins. LAPA users at close quarters in a doorway are difficult to contest even on PC. Instead, use a different angle — above, through a window, from further back. The LAPA cannot punish you from range; force that version of the fight.

Equipment: Decoy Grenades. LAPA users who rush rely on knowing where you are. A Decoy Grenade thrown in the direction of the rush pulls their attention to a false position long enough to reposition. S8 started decoys at 2 per loadout — use both.

Countering the Static-HV SMG

Why it works

The Static-HV is one of S8's two new weapons. It fills a gap between the LAPA's extreme close-range dominance and assault rifle range — it is effective at close-to-medium range without the LAPA's steep falloff. Players who want more flexibility than a pure SMG without switching to an AR often pair the Static-HV as a secondary alongside a longer-range primary, or run it as the primary in aggressive mid-range playstyles.

Its weaknesses

The Static-HV is a newer weapon and many players running it in ranked lobbies are still learning attachment configurations. Beyond medium range, it loses to ARs and marksman rifles. It also has a slightly higher skill floor than the LAPA for spray control — players who are not comfortable with it can make it easy to punish.

How to counter it on PC

Play the range bands. The Static-HV is most dangerous in the 5–15 meter window. At 0–5 meters, a well-built LAPA still beats it. Past 20 meters, ARs win comfortably. If you are up against a Static-HV user, the clearest advantage is using a rifle to hold engagements they cannot match at range.

Call out spray patterns. If you survive an engagement against a Static-HV and take damage, note whether their spray is consistent or drifting. Spray control variance is something you can exploit on the second engagement by positioning at the distance where they lose control. On PC, you can hold a target at the exact range where their weapon underperforms — something that requires active thought on mobile is done naturally with mouse aim.

Use high-ground. The Static-HV's effectiveness depends on lateral tracking during close-to-medium fights. High ground changes the angle of engagement, forcing users to re-aim vertically instead of horizontally. High-ground-to-low-ground mouse tracking is a natural motion; low-ground-to-high-ground is the opposite. Use elevated positions when available.

Countering the ISO Hemlock AR

Why it works

The ISO Hemlock is S8's other new assault rifle and it performs well at the range where most ranked engagements happen — 15 to 40 meters. In standard S8 ranked lobbies, this is the most common fight distance. The Hemlock has a predictable recoil pattern that experienced players have had most of the season to learn, and it has a per-bullet damage profile that punishes anyone standing still at medium range.

Its weaknesses

The ISO Hemlock at close range can be outpaced by an SMG wielded by a player who closes the gap first. It also requires consistent recoil control — players relying on burst fire often over-correct after the first burst if their muscle memory is not set. If you get inside the Hemlock's optimal range, you can force an unfavorable exchange.

How to counter it on PC

Know the range and get closer or further. At close range you can contest an ISO Hemlock with any good SMG. At long range, a Rytec AMR or other sniper/marksman rifle has a clear advantage over it. The fight you want to avoid is the mid-range standoff where the Hemlock is designed to win.

Wait for the reload. The ISO Hemlock has a standard AR magazine size. Against a player who opened a fight, has taken damage, or has been firing at others, the reload window is a significant opening. On PC, recognizing an animation — the visual tell of a reload — through a mouse-aimed scope is clean. Timing your push off the reload is the most reliable way to close distance on an Hemlock user.

Counter with the Krig 6. The Krig 6 AR has been a consistent ranked performer in S8. Its damage profile at longer distances gives it an edge over the Hemlock in direct 40+ meter exchanges. If you are running Krig 6 as your primary and an ISO Hemlock user holds a lane past 35 meters, you have the weapon advantage — play that range rather than pushing.

Use Flash Drones. The Flash Drone equipment interrupts aim-down-sights. Against a player holding a mid-range angle with the ISO Hemlock, a Flash Drone deployed to their sightline forces them off it. On PC, equipment deployment is done from a keybind without interrupting movement — this is a genuine advantage over mobile players navigating a touch menu under fire.

Countering the Cronen Squall AR

Why it works

The Cronen Squall was buffed coming into S8 from its S7 state. It is a burst/semi-auto AR that rewards players with precise shot timing. Each burst or shot deals high damage, and skilled players can make the Cronen Squall punish anyone who holds a visible position for more than a half-second.

Its weaknesses

The Cronen Squall punishes static players. Against a player who keeps moving and uses cover between each engagement, the per-shot timing advantage disappears. It also has a lower maximum rate of fire than a full-auto AR — a player who rushes a Cronen Squall user with a close-range weapon and forces a full-auto firefight is moving outside the Cronen's strength.

How to counter it on PC

Never stand still. Strafing between cover is effective against any precise weapon. On PC, WASD strafing is cleaner than the virtual joystick equivalent — you can go left-right-left while firing without micro-adjusting your aim. Against a Cronen Squall user watching a lane, constant lateral movement reduces the precision advantage they get from each burst.

Close the distance. Rushing a Cronen Squall user with an SMG or aggressive AR is a viable play if you can get close quickly. The Squall's fire rate does not scale to close quarters the same way a LAPA or Static-HV does. At doorway range, most SMGs win the exchange.

Use cover actively. Peek-and-duck behind cover between shots. The Cronen Squall's burst timing means there is a reset window between shots where the user is not firing. Peek during their fire, duck during the reset. Repeating this puts them in a situation where their precision advantage only activates when you give them the window — and you control when that window is open.

General PC Counter-Play Principles

These apply across all the meta weapons above:

Track the reload, not the kill. When you see an opponent fire at something else, count in your head. ARs reload in roughly 2.5–3 seconds, SMGs slightly less. Your aggressive window is during and immediately after that reload. On PC, repositioning to push during a reload does not require you to take your aim off the player's general position the way mobile input would — you can move aggressively while keeping your mouse in the target's direction.

Sound matters more at range. Gunfire direction is easier to identify with headphones at a desktop. Use sound to pre-position before visual contact. Knowing a player is running a LAPA around a corner before you see them lets you fall back to your range advantage before the engagement starts.

Sensitivity calibration. If you have set your sensitivity for general play, verify it specifically against each meta weapon's engagement range. A sensitivity that tracks a LAPA user rushing at 8 meters is different from the sensitivity that lets you hit a Cronen Squall user strafing at 30 meters. The sensitivity guide for S8 (published September 20) covers per-range adjustments.

The S8 meta is readable at this point in the season. Players who have been running these weapons for six-plus weeks know their optimal engagement range — and so do you. Counter-play is not about using a "meta-killer" weapon. It is about forcing the fight outside the range where the weapon works. On GameLoop PC, your input precision makes that positioning play easier to execute than it is on mobile.
