BAL-27 Guide for CODM Season 8 on GameLoop PC — How to Build the Core of Reason Mythic AR
The BAL-27 is one of the three Honkai Impact 3rd Mythic weapons in S8. It is also one of the best close-to-mid range ARs in CODM. Here is how to build and use it on PC before you commit your Free Mythic choice.
Season 8 introduces three Mythic weapons through the Honkai Impact 3rd collaboration: the Static-HV Core of Fire, the ISO Core of Thunder, and the BAL-27 Core of Reason. The Free Mythic Pick 1 of 3 event, starting September 11, asks you to choose one. The BAL-27 Core of Reason is paired with Kestrel — Herrscher of Reason, the third Honkai operator draw in S8.
Before you commit your Free Mythic pick, it helps to know what the weapon actually does and whether it fits how you play. This guide covers the BAL-27 as a weapon and why the Core of Reason mythic blueprint specifically suits GameLoop PC players.
What the BAL-27 Is
The BAL-27 is an assault rifle built around a fast fire rate and a damage profile that peaks in the close-to-mid range. Among CODM's AR roster, it falls closer to the aggressive end than the long-range precision end. It is not a weapon for holding angles at 50 meters. It is a weapon for clearing rooms, pushing objectives, and winning exchanges where the fight happens fast.
Its fire rate is high for an AR — faster than the LAPA SMG at the mid-range bracket where SMGs typically have range advantages, but slower than dedicated close-range SMGs. The damage-per-shot and the fire rate together produce a time-to-kill that competes with or beats most SMGs inside 20 meters, while retaining the AR's consistency at 20–35 meters that SMGs start to lose.
That profile — fast for an AR, controlled enough for mid-range — is what makes it a long-standing high-pick weapon in CODM ranked.
Why the BAL-27 Works on GameLoop PC
ARs benefit from PC mouse input differently from SMGs. SMGs ask you to track fast-moving targets at close range, which mouse acceleration makes easier but which also rewards reaction time. ARs ask you to maintain aim during sustained bursts at a target that may be stationary or moving laterally. Mouse drag for lateral tracking on an AR is one of the places where emulator play has a consistent advantage over mobile: you move the mouse cleanly to track, rather than fighting touchscreen drift.
The BAL-27's fire rate amplifies this. A faster fire rate means more shots per second, which means your lateral tracking accuracy has a bigger impact on DPS than it does with a slower weapon. On mobile, maintaining lateral track through a BAL-27 burst is a skill that takes time to develop. On PC, with a mouse, it is closer to natural. You move the mouse with the target, you fire, the shots land at a higher percentage.
The result is that the BAL-27's theoretical time-to-kill on paper is closer to your actual time-to-kill in practice on PC than it is on mobile. That is a consistent reason to favour fast-firing ARs in general when playing on emulator, and the BAL-27 is one of the best examples in CODM's roster.
How to Build the BAL-27 in Season 8
No new S8 balance changes apply to the BAL-27 itself — this weapon did not receive a buff or nerf in the S8 patch notes. The build principles that worked in S7 and S6 remain valid. What changes in S8 is the meta around it: the FSS Hurricane nerf creates space for ARs in the role the Hurricane previously filled, and the LAPA and Krig 6 buffs move some players who were running versatile ARs toward those SMG/AR alternatives. The BAL-27 fills the gap between them: faster than the Krig 6 at close range, more range than the LAPA when the fight stretches out.
The five-slot build should prioritise, in order:
1. Recoil control. The BAL-27's fast fire rate creates vertical climb during sustained bursts. A stock and a rear grip that reduce vertical recoil are usually the first two slots. On PC you pull the mouse down to compensate, but overcompensation at fast fire rates causes you to shoot into the floor — building down the recoil reduces the margin of error you need to manage manually.
2. Damage range. The BAL-27's damage peak runs from 0 to about 20 meters. A barrel attachment that extends the first damage tier slightly — into the 25-meter window — costs you some of the ADS speed or sprint speed, but makes the weapon more reliable at the mid-range encounters that happen most often in CODM multiplayer. Choose one barrel that extends range without adding more than 5–8% ADS penalty.
3. Mobility (not stacked, one slot). One magazine or perk attachment that keeps the sprint-to-fire time short is worth more than a second recoil attachment. The BAL-27 is an aggressive AR. You will be moving into fights, not waiting for them. STF speed matters.
4. Leave ADS time alone unless you have a slot. The BAL-27's natural ADS speed is reasonable for an AR. If you have already filled recoil, range, and mobility slots, an ADS speed attachment is a fine fifth choice. If you are choosing between ADS speed and a second recoil option, take the second recoil option — it produces more consistent shots in the mid-match engagements where the BAL-27 excels.
5. Do not stack range at the expense of everything else. The BAL-27 is not trying to be a long-range weapon. Two range attachments that push it past 35 meters are sacrificing its close-to-mid identity for a role where the Krig 6 or FFAR 1 outperforms it anyway. Build for the weapon's actual strength.
The Core of Reason Mythic Blueprint
The BAL-27 Core of Reason is the Honkai Impact 3rd collaboration blueprint, paired with Kestrel — Herrscher of Reason. If you receive this blueprint via the Free Mythic Pick event, it comes with a set of default attachments configured in the blueprint.
A Mythic blueprint is cosmetic — it does not change the weapon's underlying stats or attachment slots. What it changes is the appearance: custom animated kill effects, unique inspect animations, and themed sound design. The Core of Reason blueprint applies the Herrscher of Reason aesthetic from Honkai Impact 3rd to the BAL-27's base model.
For the Free Mythic Pick decision: the Core of Reason blueprint is worth choosing if you are already a BAL-27 player, or if you intend to make the BAL-27 your primary AR this season. Receiving a Mythic blueprint for a weapon you do not use is a missed opportunity — the cosmetic only matters if the weapon is in your rotation.
If you are currently running Static-HV or ISO Hemlock as your primary, consider whether the Core of Fire or Core of Thunder are more useful before locking in your choice. The guide to choosing between the three is published two days after this one.
Settings for the BAL-27 on GameLoop PC
Sensitivity. The BAL-27 fires faster than most ARs. The same sensitivity adjustment that applies to the Static-HV SMG applies here: slightly lower than your long-range AR sensitivity. Target the range where BAL-27 fights happen (15–30 meters) and make sure your mouse movement feels controlled at that distance, not reactive. 10–15% below your default AR sensitivity is a reasonable starting point.
ADS sensitivity multiplier. Some players run a separate ADS sensitivity for close-range ARs. If you have an ADS-specific sensitivity configured in GameLoop, the BAL-27 benefits from a slightly lower ADS multiplier compared to what you would use for a precision weapon like the Locus. You are not sniping — you are tracking. Keep the ADS sensitivity in a range where lateral mouse movement translates cleanly to on-screen tracking without overswinging.
Fire mode. The BAL-27 is full-auto and benefits from it at close-to-mid range. If you have custom keymapping that allows toggling fire mode, the full-auto default is correct for most situations. Tap-fire at 35+ meters to reduce vertical climb when taking longer-range shots, but this is a refined technique rather than a first-session priority.
When to Use the BAL-27 vs. Other S8 ARs
Use the BAL-27 when: Your playstyle involves pushing objectives and engaging inside 30 meters consistently. Hardpoint and Domination favour it. If you are a Krig 6 user who wants more close-range aggression, the BAL-27 gives you that without switching to an SMG.
Use the Krig 6 instead when: The map has longer sight lines and you are spending more time at 25–40 meters than close-in. The Krig 6 S8 buff added an initial 31-damage phase at 10 meters and extended its second range, making it a more reliable pick for mixed-range maps. The BAL-27 outperforms it inside 20 meters; the Krig 6 is more consistent at 25–45.
Use the LAPA instead when: You want the speed advantage of an SMG alongside a buffed damage profile that competes with ARs at short-to-mid range. The LAPA's S8 buff raised its damage across all tiers. It does not have the BAL-27's fire-rate identity, but it has better sprint speed and ADS, which suits aggressive play on small-to-medium maps.
Use the ISO Hemlock instead when: You received the ISO Core of Thunder from the Free Mythic Pick and want to play the weapon you invested in. The ISO Hemlock is described as low-recoil mid-range; it is a more controlled weapon than the BAL-27. If you prefer deliberate, consistent engagements over fast-fire aggression, the ISO suits that style better.
A Note on the Free Mythic Event
The Free Mythic Pick 1 of 3 event begins September 11 and gives you weekly missions to earn progress toward one of the three Honkai collab mythics. You can change your selection before completing the final milestone — there is no penalty for switching early.
This means you do not need to commit immediately. If you want to test the BAL-27 in live matches before locking in Core of Reason, you have time. Pick it provisionally, play a week of ranked with the BAL-27 in your primary slot, and decide before the final milestone. If it does not feel right, switch to Core of Fire or Core of Thunder before you finish.
The guide to comparing all three mythics and which one fits different playstyles publishes October 5.
