How to Fix CODM Lag on GameLoop PC (2026)

CODM lag on GameLoop usually means one of two things: FPS drops from hardware pressure, or network lag from your ISP's routing. They need different fixes. Here is how to tell them apart and fix both.

Most guides treat CODM lag as a single problem and throw every setting at it at once. That approach sometimes works by accident. This one starts with a test that tells you what you are actually dealing with, then gives you the correct fix for each case.

Two types of lag, two sets of fixes

Performance lag shows up as stutters, frame drops, and an unresponsive feel even when your ping counter looks fine. The game is running, but not fast enough to deliver frames smoothly. The bottleneck is your CPU, GPU, or RAM — or all three working badly together inside the emulator.

Network lag shows up as high ping, rubber-banding, and delayed hit registration. The game is running smoothly on your machine, but packets between GameLoop and the CODM servers are taking too long or arriving out of order. The bottleneck is your connection or the path your data takes to reach the game server.

Both can coexist. But they need different fixes, and if you are spending time on routing tweaks when the real problem is your emulator's RAM allocation, you will never get anywhere.

The two-minute test

Launch a private match — bot match or practice range — and watch two numbers at the same time.

Open the in-game network overlay (Settings → Audio → scroll down to the Debug or Network display option). Note your ping. Then open Task Manager on Windows (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), click Performance, and watch CPU, GPU, and RAM usage during the match.

If your ping is above 100 ms and the CPU/GPU meters are below 80%, network is the problem. Your hardware can handle the game; the connection cannot keep up.

If your ping is under 60 ms but the game still stutters, drops frames, or freezes briefly, performance is the problem. The connection is fine; the emulator or your hardware is the bottleneck.

If your ping is above 100 ms AND the CPU or GPU is pinned near 100%, fix performance first. A system under that much load cannot route packets reliably either — the two problems are compounding each other.


Performance fixes

RAM allocation — the most common culprit

GameLoop's default memory allocation is conservative. It is set to work on machines with 4 GB of RAM, which means it often underallocates on machines with 8 GB or 16 GB — leaving the emulator starved while Windows and background processes have room to breathe.

Open GameLoop, click the gear icon (Settings), go to Engine, and find the Memory setting. Set it to leave 2–3 GB for Windows. On an 8 GB machine, assign 5–6 GB. On a 16 GB machine, assign 12–13 GB. On anything above 16 GB, 13–14 GB is enough — the game does not need more.

Do not set it to the maximum available figure. Windows needs working memory to handle network, audio, and background processes. Starving Windows produces the same stutter you get from starving the emulator.

After changing RAM, restart GameLoop completely — not just the game inside it.

Rendering engine — match it to your GPU

GameLoop offers several rendering backends. Using the wrong one for your hardware is a common source of stutters that look like network lag because the frame timing becomes irregular.

DirectX+ (DirectX 11 enhanced) is the correct choice for most players with a dedicated GPU — an Nvidia or AMD card installed separately from the CPU. It is stable, delivers consistent frame pacing, and handles CODM's asset load without the per-session shader compilation stutter that DirectX 12 introduces.

OpenGL+ is the correct choice if you are running on integrated graphics — Intel UHD, AMD Radeon integrated, or Nvidia on a laptop without a discrete GPU active. OpenGL+ is better optimised for the lower memory bandwidth that integrated graphics provides.

Vulkan is available in some GameLoop builds and is designed for AMD dedicated GPUs. If you have an AMD RX 500 series or newer as your primary GPU, Vulkan is worth a test. On Nvidia hardware, Vulkan tends to produce irregular frame pacing and is not worth using.

Do not switch renderers repeatedly as a tuning step. Switch once, test for a full session, and only switch again if you are reverting to baseline.

In-game resolution — Smooth or Standard, not Ultra HD

Inside CODM, go to Settings → Graphics. Set Graphics Quality to Smooth or Standard. Set Frame Rate to the highest your hardware can maintain consistently — if you are targeting 60 fps reliably, use 60. Chasing 90 or 120 on hardware that cannot hold it produces worse performance than a locked 60 that never drops.

Set the resolution to Medium or Low if you are seeing frame drops. Ultra HD doubles the pixel count the GPU must render and is responsible for more performance lag complaints than any other setting.

Anti-aliasing can be disabled without visible quality loss at the resolutions most emulator players use. Shadows on Low instead of High saves significant GPU work on CODM's outdoor maps.

Close background applications

Windows allows other processes to compete for CPU and memory while you play. The common offenders are browser tabs with video, Discord with video enabled, and any application doing background updates.

Before starting a session: close all browser windows, pause Windows Update (Settings → Windows Update → Pause Updates), and check Task Manager for anything using more than 3–5% CPU continuously. End those processes or quit the applications generating them.

Discord can stay open, but disable hardware acceleration in Discord's settings (Settings → Advanced → Hardware Acceleration, toggle off). This moves Discord's rendering off the GPU and back to the CPU, where it competes less with the emulator.

Pre-download shaders before the first match

After a major CODM patch, the game compiles shaders during actual gameplay if you do not trigger pre-download first. This is the cause of the heavy stutter that affects every player for the first one or two matches of a new season.

Before playing a real match after any patch: go to the CODM lobby, look for the shader pre-download prompt in the loading screen or settings, and let it complete. This takes 5–15 minutes and moves the stutter out of your matches entirely.

If you miss this step, the stutters will reduce on their own after 2–3 matches as the cache fills. You are not experiencing a hardware problem; you are watching shader compilation happen in real time.


Network fixes

Wired ethernet is not optional if you have consistent high ping

Wi-Fi introduces variable latency — sometimes 5 ms, sometimes 40 ms, depending on interference, distance, and what else is on the network. That variability is exactly the kind of fluctuating delay that manifests as rubber-banding in CODM.

If you have a router nearby, plug in a cable. Ethernet does not give you lower base ping to the server — your ISP and routing determine that — but it removes the variable component that makes ping feel worse than the number suggests.

5 GHz WiFi over 2.4 GHz

If ethernet is not possible, connect to your router's 5 GHz network instead of 2.4 GHz. The 5 GHz band has less interference from neighbouring networks and household devices (microwaves, cordless phones) and typically delivers more consistent latency even if the raw speed numbers look similar.

The trade-off is range. 5 GHz does not penetrate walls as well as 2.4 GHz. If your PC is far from the router, 5 GHz may be unusable — in that case, a powerline adapter or a single long ethernet cable is a better investment than anything you can do in software.

Test different CODM server regions

CODM's region selection affects the physical distance your packets travel. The in-game default selects the server with the best reported ping, but this measurement happens at connection time and does not account for routing congestion during a match.

Go to CODM Settings → Basic → Server Selection and manually test 2–3 nearby regions across separate sessions. The correct region for your location is not always the one with the lowest initial ping — it is the one with the most consistent ping across a full session. A region reporting 40 ms that spikes to 180 ms mid-game is worse than one that sits steadily at 65 ms.

Game-specific routing tools

If you have tested server regions, are on ethernet, and still see consistently high or fluctuating ping, the problem is likely in the routing between your ISP and the CODM servers — not in your local network.

ExitLag is a routing tool built specifically for this problem.
